Making the Switch to Digital Reading

Many people have been contemplating the switch to digital reading. For those of us that have extensive book collections, it can be hard trying to put that all to a stop. We’ll never see our book collection grow once we switch to digital, and our books are going to be stuck there gathering dust until we feel nostalgic enough to pull one off the shelf and give it a good read (after we dust it, of course). However, we live in a digital age now and the space premium we pay for having an extensive library of books is a large one. Not only does it take a lot of care to look after physical books, but it can also take up a considerable chunk of space that could be put to better use.

So to convince you to make the switch, here are some of the most compelling arguments for switching to digital reading.

Accessibility

One of the most enjoyable things about reading is the ability to go into a library, converse with people, look up the latest releases and sample a book before we head to a bookstore and invest in it. It could be a fun young-adult thriller or it could be a several-part epic that we’ve never heard of the. The beauty of reading is that there’s always new choices, and every store has its author's signature style. However, as fun as it is to surround yourself with books, there’s a much easier option: going online. You can still sample books and there’s still a huge collection (arguably more than any library or bookstore could hold) and you can even sort them by your own criteria. For instance, if you only want to look for a multi-part science fiction novel, then you can do that. The ability to search for exact and specific things is wonderful and goes a long way to helping you find your next favourite read.

Price

Books are expensive—let’s not beat around the bush. However, buying eBooks or digital copies is far cheaper, and you can even get free books if you’re willing to search around. This article titled Free Kindle Books | A Unique Guide to 10 Amazing Reads shows that there are some outstanding reads to be had no matter how much you pay. It goes to show that enjoyment and fun don’t have to be limited by the price you pay. However, there is the initial investment in an e-reader, but if you’re willing to shell out the modest price for something like a Kindle, then you’ll end up saving a tonne of money in the long run.

Choice

Let’s not forget that books aren’t the only thing on the agenda when you have an e-reader. There’s also comics, biographies, newspapers and even magazines. This opens up the ability to sample, purchase and read several different types of publications. There’s even the option to search for books in foreign languages with translations which could open up the door to fiction and nonfiction from all over the world.

  2. The negative aspect of digital reading is that the relative retention is very low compared to paperback books. This has been proven scientifically as well; particularly for visual readers who retain concepts and memories by linking them with the physical realm - like a book with a unique cover and composition. Happy reading!
